IGCSE PROGRAMME

The International Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) programme was founded over 25 years ago, and is currently offered in over 150 countries.

It is a two-year programme of study for upper middle schools, in which every subject taken by the student is assessed by an externally marked exam. There are around 100 subjects available, but typically a student will sit exams in 7 – 10 subjects. Their performance in these exams is then compared with all the other students sitting the exam worldwide, and a mark between A* (the highest) and G (the lowest) is given.

It is recognised as a foundation programme for A levels and the IB Diploma, which in turn are recognised as entry qualifications to Universities throughout the world.

It is also recognised in many countries, including in Germany, as a valid certificate for leaving or changing school. In NRW for example, students that pass a minimum of 5 IGCSEs at grade C or higher (2 languages, maths, science and a humanities subject) can use the certificates as a school leaving certificate (mittlerer Schulabschluss). This can then be used as entry to another international school or a German grammar school (Gymnasium). Source: http://recognition.cie.org.uk/OrganisationDetails.aspx?QI=2&RI=1755

It is possible to download the syllabus from the Cambridge CIE site using the following link:

It is important that students use the correct syllabus code because there are often different syllabuses for the same subject.

The syllabus will tell you which content will be assessed in the examinations and will inform you of the type of tasks that will appear in the various parts of the exam. Be careful to use this year’s syllabus - they change each year. For example, students taking exams in June 2018 will use the 2018 syllabus.
